Music is an extremely powerful influence in many people’s lives. It is especially important for us spoonies to listen to music, recent studies show. Studies show music reduces stress and anxiety, pain, and improves the immune system! (Read more about it here.) Since all of the side effects listed usually impact a chraintim’s* life on a daily basis, listening to music is especially important.
However, it can be hard to find just the right mix of music to listen to depending on your mood or state of mind. When I am going through a particularly hard time (which usually means my pain is flaring up), listening to music can really improve my mood and how I feel about my situation. But when you are enduring that difficult time, you don’t want to be searching for just the right music and spend time compiling a playlist, right? Well that’s no longer a concern! Here I have compiled a list of my favorite songs to motivate you during tough times. (Click here for the songs all set up in a playlist on YouTube.)
1. Fight Song – Rachel Platten
Now I know this song is extremely popular right now and some of you may be feeling like it’s over played. Regardless, I can’t get through this song without crying. This really is my take back my life song because it reminds me that I definitely have a lot of fight left in me!
2. I’m Not Afraid – Eminem
I’m usually not in to rap at all, but Eminem always displays such passion that’s it’s hard not to say, “Alright. I see where you’re coming from”. Not only does this song express a lot of the anger you feel when you are going through a tough time, it also let’s you know you’re not alone, and you can take a stand against whatever hardship you are working through.
3. Superheroes – The Script
Not only is this music video inspiring and maybe helps to minimize your own problems, it also reminds you that struggles are how a superhero learns to fly. Plus, especially for us spoonies, the repeated line, “Every day, every hour, turn the pain into power” is enough to light a fire in our souls.
4. Keep Your Head Up – Andy Grammer
This video is more lighthearted and fun (which can be much needed during out darkest days), but it still gives that important reminder that everyone has hard times and if you just keep your head up, you will make it through!
5. Brave – Sara Bareilles
This is another popular song that never fails to provoke tears. This song encourages you to speak your mind, be yourself, and show the world how big your brave is! Us chraintim’s* brave is ENORMOUS, and don’t any of your forget it! What we deal with on a daily basis is unimaginable to most, so give yourself a pat on the back for being brave and dealing with you illness!
6. The Climb – Miley Cyrus
Even though I’m not a big fan of Miley and the video is basically a trailer for the Hannah Montana movie, this song still motivates me on my worst days. This song speaks to a topic I have been obsessed with lately, which is basically that quote, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making plans”. We have to remember it’s not the destination, it’s the journey!
Okay, I know that was a little too much cliche in one paragraph, but our goals will always be there. There will always be a new goal or plans to make, but what you are doing right now, reading THIS post, is your life! So try to be a little more in the moment and use your current struggles, whatever they may be, to motivate you more.
7. Hall of Fame – The Script ft. will.i.am
This song/video is basically about how it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, if you work hard enough you can do anything. This is a message I firmly believe in as my motto in life is simply, “Work hard. Period”. I also like the little bit of signing by the supposedly deaf or hard-of-hearing girl at the beginning, as I am a Deaf Studies major. All in all, great pick-me-up song!
8. Unwritten – Natasha Bedingfield
This song is a bit of an oldie, but still a goodie! It’s message is simply that we are in control of our own destiny and our stories are still unwritten. This can be especially inspiring during a tough time because it reminds us whatever happens from that point on is our choice. We have the power to choose how our stories will end. Choose wisely.
9. The Fighter – Gym Class Heroes ft. Ryan Tedder
This video features Olympic gymnast John Orozco and his journey. Orozco was an unlikely Olympian, coming from a poor family in the Bronx. But with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears he became the fighter he is today. His story is very inspiring, as is this song. Remember to give ’em hell and keep fighting! We can all get through our tough times together!
P.S. The first line of this song is about how the artist didn’t really sleep well last night and every spoonie can relate to that! 😉
10. Invisible – Hunter Hayes
This is arguably the most powerful song on my list. For those of us with chronic illnesses, our pain is often unseen, or invisible, to most. This song reminds us that even though our pain may feel invisible, others see it and you are not alone. That is certainly true if you are reading this blog. Please never feel alone or that no one understands you! Please click on any of my social media links and get in touch with me, or simply comment below. What is often referred to as the #SpoonieFamily never leaves anyone behind!
11. No Boundaries – Kris Allen
Season 8 winner of American Idol, Kris Allen, wrote and performs this beautiful song. Although this is not an official music video (but instead one a fan put together consisting of clips from several other artist’s music videos), it’s still a pretty good video and an excellent song. The verse that really gets me (and I think will get every chraintim*) is:
I fought to the limit to stand on the edge
What if today is as good as it gets?
Don’t know where the future’s headed
But nothing’s gonna bring me down
I’ve jumped every bridge and I’ve run every line
I’ve risked being saved but I always knew why
But despite all of that the song still ends with:
With every step you climb another mountain
Every breath it’s harder to believe
You make it through the pain, weather the hurricanes
There are no boundaries!
And if that doesn’t inspire you to keep going, I don’t know what will.
Please let me know what you thought of this post and I would love to hear what songs inspire YOU! Let me know in the comments below!
*Chraintim is a word I made up that abbreviates the phrase “chronic pain victim”, which I got tired of typing repeatedly. Plus, the word is kind of cool. You should try using it too! #chraintim
